Global Dimensions

Exploring social issues through global art...

Global Dimensions is a 3-part project to develop the work of emerging artists and practitioners, globally, who use their work to explore social issues in their cultural context.

Part 1 is a 3-day course for practitioners in the Thames Valley, UK on exploring the international dimension in their work with young people and communities.

Part 2 was called ‘Inter-change 2010' - How does creative practice make a difference?’ and was a two-week international programme (9th to 25th March 2010) for young emerging practitioners on the theme of shelter. In addition to CCC, Interchange is supported by: Creative Junction CIC, Hlanganani Learning Partnership, Reading International Solidarity Centre. This included The Young People’s International Conference  on Thursday, 18th March 2010, 09.00 – 16.00hrs, hosted by Soka Gakkai International-UK at Taplow Court, Maidenhead. This conference:

Top L-R: Inter-Change Conference Taplow 18 March, Lwazi at Bucks 2012 young people's conference, Reflections exercise @ Taplow Court.
Bottom L-R: Inter-Change follow-up Reading (4 pictures), St Francis band, Malawi, Thought runway @ Inter-Change conference.

We had representatives from cultural community organisations, schools and other learning settings in: Australia, Bolivia, France, Germany, Czech Republic, India, Mali, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda and the UK.150 delegates heard presentations that showed the power of creative practice to effect change, delivered by young people from many of these countries. They had the opportunity to explore some of the creative practice described and to share ideas and skills that they can then develop in their own communities.

Part 3 is a global dimensions toolkit - by young people for young people. Using case studies from Inter-change, it is a practical toolkit with creative techniques that emerging artists and practioners can use to inform and guide ideas in their work with communities. This downloadable resource will be available from October 2010.

...and the programme continues!

We have arranged 'Inter-change follow-up' events [scroll down to 'articles' here to see details]. And 3 people from the Aarti Home in India came to visit us and to talk to children in a number of schools in the region. We interviewed them on arrival to capture their first impressions of England and then 2 days before leaving to document the changes in their attitudes and to find out what they achieved during their stay. Interviews below.
